The Process...

Building this soft seating took a lot of planning! I first started out with prototyping an overall form. My inpsiration came from topography maps. I wanted to create a seating form that allowed the user to be able to fully relax their body for a grounding experience within the comfort of their home.

My prototypes slowly became larger and more detailed as I began to think more in depth about the ergonomics of my seating. Thinking in full scale began to present more "real life" problems for me to solve.

Once I had decided on a final form my next course of action was to learn how to upholster! That meant me doing research and diving into the world of upholstery art. I went to every local fabric store to get my hands on different materials and even did some research at home tearing apart my couch cushions to understand their engineering.

When the course of action was finalized and every step was meticulously written in my sketchbook construction finally started! I made a plan drawing using AutoCAD. I then used our CNC router to cut out a base made of plywood and supporting layers out of pink insulation foam.

Once I began to assemble the upholstery foam onto the seat it really began to showcase its form. I cut out the upholstery foam and assembled it to the pink insulation foam.

After assembling the upholstery foam and covering the entire chair in a layer of batting I began the daunting task of sewing the cover. The cover for this seating is one piece that fits entirely over the form. It is held in place by tethers connecting the cover together to hold the shape on the curves. The cover is then stapled to the very bottom piece of wood. After everything was put together I covered the bottom in a soft leather alternative and finished it off with some short 1 inch legs.
